John Harrison fue un relojero inglés autodidacta, famoso por haber diseñado y puesto en funcionamiento el primer cronómetro marino de alta precisión, con el cual era posible determinar la longitud con exactitud cuando se habían recorrido largas distancias. Su mérito principal es haber resuelto el problema de la longitud mediante el empleo de cronómetros construidos por él mismo.
