Super Mario 64 es un videojuego de plataformas desarrollado y publicado por Nintendo para la Nintendo 64. Salió a la venta en Japón y Norteamérica en 1996, y en las regiones PAL en 1997. Es la primera entrega de Super Mario con gráficos en 3D y combina elementos tradicionales de la franquicia —modo de juego, estilo visual y personajes— en un gran mundo abierto. En la historia, Bowser invade el castillo de la Princesa Peach, la secuestra y esconde las fuentes de protección, las Estrellas de Poder, en muchos mundos diferentes dentro de cuadros mágicos. Como Mario, el jugador recorre los niveles y recoge estrellas de poder para desbloquear áreas del castillo, con el fin de llegar hasta Bowser y rescatar a Peach.
